Select the Right Anchorage
This is right in the bullocks harbor, very shallow but also very calm waters
Our boat has a 6’ draft, and we like quiet nights. That forces us to anchor a bit farther from the shore. Frequently, that means we get more affected by the swells and rolling/pitching. I am less sensitive to that and have mostly slept through the night without being bothered. Not so with my spouse. In the Exumas, we ended up with quite a bit of rolling. Anchoring in Black Point Harbor was ok from that perspective. But, at places like Georgetown, Stanley Cay, West Bay, and Highborne Cay, where we had anchored, there was quite a bit of rolling happening to our boat; whereas, I didn’t see boats near the shoreline being badly affected. In the future, we will need to be extra careful about which harbor we choose and where we anchor. So far, we have paid minimal attention to the direction the wind will come from at night or whether there will be swells. That would have to change, I guess.
The harbor I recommend most is Bullocks Harbor in Great Harbor Town, Cay. The place is well protected on all sides except the west, where winds and swells have no chance to reach us, as the waters are shallow for a very long stretch around the harbor. That was our final stop before we crossed the Gulf Stream to get back to Florida.
