We both grew up in Mumbai, originally known as Bombay. Although it is a coastal city, a fairly large metropolis, growing up, neither of us had a chance to do sailing or motoring. It was not a popular sport. For Indian men and, lately, women, it is the cricket that we spend our time playing. After migrating to America and pursuing a career in technology (for Hemant) and in academics (for Sonal), we both discovered that we love the ocean, particularly waking up in the morning with a gentle wave and the smell of salty air. We learned how to sail, bought a sailboat (named Laxmi), and sailed on it 4-5 weeks every year for 12 odd years. Finally, we both retired and decided to embark on a new adventure. We bought a motor boat (60’ Kadey-Krogen Trawler) and decided to cruise full-time. This is a new lifestyle - a choice that we made not knowing how much we would enjoy cruising full-time. You all of cou will hear a lot from us in the years to come as to how this adventure turns out. The boat is named Tara, after the name of a Hindu and Tibetian Goddess. According to the Buddhist scriptures, Goddess Tara is a compassionate, succoring deity who helps men “cross to the other shore.” She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as of spiritual travel along the path to enlightenment.
